Exhibition Title | Frida Kahlo
Period | 6 June – 3 September 2015
Venue | SOMA Museum of Art
The SOMA Museum of Art is holding an exhibition of the enigmatic yet widely revered female artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Born and raised in Mexico, her artistic career officially started when a surrealist poet André Breton highly praised her works during his sojourn in Mexico. Shortly after the encounter, she gradually began to gain fame as an artist abroad. She produced fifty-five pieces of self-portraits in her lifetime, and six of those are included in this exhibition. Shown first time two years ago in Paris, artworks comprised in the exhibition are collections of Jacques & Natasha Gelman. This exhibition not only features artworks of Kahlo, but also of other important Mexican artworks produced by her colleagues such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco.
