Collecting objects is not a simple task. In that regard, it is reassuring to see the recent acquisitions that the National Museum of Korea has collected are, to all appearances, on the right track in terms of their rarity and prospective research value. First, the acquisition of a mother-of-pearl-decorated Buddhist sutra box, a lacquerware from the Goryeo Dynasty, is particularly meaningful, since only about ten examples of such have been confirmed worldwide. Along with the sutra box, two Buddhist paintings produced in the same period, depicting the ‘Ten Kings of Hell’ are another notable acquisitions, because such icon has received relatively less attention in the scholarly field. Three paintings of various vegetables and fruits by Kang Se-whang are also worth noting for Kang’s versatility in art.
